She Decorated Her Fall Porch With Things Most People Wouldn’t Think to Use
Pumpkins and mums signal fall across this farmhouse porch, but much of the display comes from objects that were never sold as seasonal decor. Galvanized buckets, bushel baskets, a dairy crate, old shutters, and a weathered ladder give the arrangement its structure.
Julie from Little Farmstead filled farm-style containers with mums, ornamental cabbage, and rosemary, then worked pumpkins in faded green, white, and orange between them. Instead of repeating one planter or pumpkin color, she used different materials and heights across the porch.
Galvanized Tubs Bring Mums Down to Ground Level
Large metal tubs hold dense mums and rosemary near the steps, surrounded by pale pumpkins rather than another row of pots. Their low placement fills the space between the porch floor and taller plants behind them.
White flowers also stand out against the gray siding and weathered wood without introducing another strong fall color. Blue-green pumpkins extend that muted palette onto the ground.
Bushel Baskets Mix Flowers With Ornamental Cabbage
Wood baskets introduce a warmer surface among the galvanized containers. Ornamental cabbage fills one basket while mums occupy another, with terracotta pots left visible among the leaves.
Rosemary and pumpkins fill the spaces between the containers, so the display does not depend on flowers alone. Foliage provides much of the green after the blooms are removed.
Weathered Crates Give Pumpkins More Height
Stacking pumpkins on a vintage crate lifts them above the plants gathered near the steps. The change in height makes two pumpkins stand out without requiring another planter or decorative stand.
Worn wood also fits beside the bushel baskets and galvanized metal already used nearby. None of the containers share the same finish, but the muted surfaces keep one material from dominating the arrangement.
Detached Shutters Frame the Entrance
White shutters lean against the siding instead of sitting beside the windows. Positioned on either side of the green door, they repeat the white trim while filling narrow sections of wall that might otherwise remain empty.
The door needs little else beyond its straw wreath. Gray siding, white trim, dark green paint, and weathered pieces provide the backdrop for the pumpkins gathered below.
One Old Ladder Takes the Decor Up the Wall
Height comes from a weathered wood ladder placed between the front door and window. Small lanterns hang from the rungs, while a fabric sign occupies the center without covering the aged wood.
Pale pumpkins collected in a galvanized tub at its base connect the ladder to the arrangements near the steps. The result extends the fall display upward without hanging several separate decorations on the siding.
Vintage Farm Pieces Fill the Smaller Corners
Another crate sits on a narrow woven table beneath the window, holding ornamental cabbage and small pumpkins at eye level. Black rain boots left beside it add to the farmhouse setting without functioning as fall decor.
Moving some pumpkins away from the floor prevents every cluster from looking alike. Each part of the porch gets a different combination of plants, containers, and found pieces.
An Antique Daybed Turns the Porch Into Another Living Space
Julie had wanted an antique daybed on the porch for years before someone clearing space in her home gave her one. The piece even came with a trundle.
Pillows, striped bedding, and a thick throw turn the covered end of the porch into a place to sit rather than another area for pumpkins. Dried hydrangeas in a basket beside the bed bring the seasonal palette into this end without copying the arrangements near the entrance.
Fall Decor Doesn’t Stop at the Front Door
Stepping back reveals how far the arrangement extends. Plants and pumpkins begin below the steps, continue onto the porch, and lead toward the door, while the ladder and shutters carry the composition above floor level.
Most of the pieces can remain after fall ends. Removing the pumpkins and mums still leaves crates, baskets, shutters, galvanized containers, the ladder, and daybed as part of the porch, making the seasonal layer easier to change without rebuilding the entire space.
