Purple Paint Turned This Beige Home Office Into a Completely Different Room
Want to give a beige home office more color without replacing the furniture already in it? This makeover shared by Reddit user u/topnotchwalnut changed the room with Sherwin-Williams Thistle paint, a $60 floral rug, a secondhand green chair, and a furniture reshuffle that created a separate reading spot between the windows.
Instead of replacing the wood-and-white desk, matching dressers, pink office chair, woven shades, and floor lamp, she changed the surfaces and moved key pieces into new positions. Beige walls became mauve-purple, the gray carpet receded beneath a dark botanical rug, and the dresser between the windows moved out to make space for a green lounge chair and side table.
Beige Walls and Gray Carpet Defined the Original Room
Two windows occupied much of the far wall, leaving the dresser between them and a smaller matching piece beside the door. Beige walls, gray carpet, white trim, and woven shades formed the backdrop.
The desk sat along the right wall, while plants and a pink office chair supplied most of the color. The center of the room remained open, and the area between the windows served as dresser storage rather than seating.
Desk Wall Had Plenty of Furniture but Little Color
The wood-and-white desk held a monitor, raised shelf, lamp, and office supplies. Underneath, cables, containers, and a trash bin remained visible against the wall.
A pale rug marked the work area without extending far beyond the desk. The pink swivel chair stood out against the beige wall, while the wood desktop repeated the drawer fronts used on the dressers across the room.
Sherwin-Williams Thistle Covers the Beige Walls
Mauve-purple paint now wraps the room while the ceiling, baseboards, window casing, and woven shades remain white or neutral. The new wall color changes the backdrop without altering the architectural details.
The project owner completed the painting over one weekend, cutting in around the edges first and applying two coats the following day. She used a ladder along the ceiling rather than masking the edges with tape.
Window Corner Becomes a Reading Spot
The dresser between the windows is gone from this corner. In its place sits a deep green round chair with a floral pillow, paired with a small green side table and the floor lamp that was already in the office.
Plants occupy the opposite side of the chair, while books and small objects sit within reach on the table. The change gives the office a second use without adding a divider or taking space from the desk.
Dresser Moves Instead of Leaving the Room
The larger dresser now sits against another wall, retaining the storage that previously occupied the window corner. Its stained wood drawer fronts and white frame remain unchanged.
Above it, a gold-framed mirror replaces the smaller wall mirror from the original setup. A dark wood floor mirror stands beside the dresser, while cosmetics and a tray use the top as a dressing surface.
Floral Rug Changes Most of the Visible Floor
A dark botanical rug now covers the center of the room, leaving a strip of gray carpet visible around its edges. Dense leaves, flowers, and vines introduce green, pink, peach, blue, and cream across the floor.
The pattern pulls together colors already present elsewhere: green from the reading chair and plants, pink from the office chair, mauve from the walls, and brown from the wood furniture. Reddit responses drew repeated questions about the rug, making it one of the most noticed additions in the makeover.
Desk Stays Put While Its Surroundings Change
The work area still uses the wood-and-white desk and pink swivel chair, but the pale rug has been replaced by the larger botanical pattern. The purple wall now fills the background behind the monitor.
A dresser sits beside the desk after the furniture reshuffle, and a snake plant fills the opposite corner. The desk itself required no makeover to fit the new palette.
Before and After Shows Where the Changes Happened
The desk and pink chair remain in the same work zone in both images. What disappears is the beige backdrop and pale floor treatment.
Thistle paint fills the wall behind the desk, while the botanical rug extends beneath the chair and across the room. Furniture moved between zones, and the former dresser spot between the windows became a reading corner rather than another storage area.
