Manton Road: An Off-Grid Shipping Container Cabin
Yama Architecture transformed two shipping containers into a fully self-sustaining off-grid cabin in Manton, California. Designed to be secure, mobile, and low-impact, the cabin is a practical solution where permanent construction was not allowed.
The interiors are compact yet functional, with a propane-powered kitchen, heating, and lighting, plus solar panels for supplemental power. Durable finishes were chosen to handle gear, mud, and heavy use, while large sliding openings connect the space to the outdoors.
From the outside, the container keeps its rugged industrial look, blending utility with minimal intervention. Inside, the warm wood-lined interior contrasts with the steel shell, proving how shipping containers can be reimagined as resilient retreats.
