Forget Plant Stands: Cinder Blocks Created a Better Backyard Display

Plant stands often limit how many containers fit into a small patio or backyard corner. Once the shelves fill up, the only option is buying another stand or spreading pots across the ground.

Reddit user u/Accomplished_Pen616 found a different solution by stacking ordinary cinder blocks into a modular plant wall. Each opening became its own planter shelf, creating space for flowers, herbs, succulents, and foliage plants without building a permanent structure.

Construction Cinder Blocks Became a Living Plant Wall

The project starts with concrete cinder blocks stacked in an offset pattern. No mortar holds the blocks together, making the display easy to rearrange or expand as more plants are added.

Every opening works as an individual planting space. Some hold flowering annuals, while others display trailing vines, succulents, colorful coleus, or ornamental grasses. The staggered layout keeps each pot visible instead of hiding plants behind one another.

The finished wall works as more than a planter because the arrangement can change throughout the year. Spring flowers can give way to summer annuals, herbs, or fall color without rebuilding the structure.

Painting the cinder blocks a dark charcoal finish shifts attention toward the plants instead of the concrete itself. As new pots replace old ones, the same wall continues to evolve, turning inexpensive building blocks into a backyard display that can grow and change season after season.
