DIY Concrete Countertop
A concrete countertop is an easy and affordable DIY project that can give your kitchen a modern, high-end look without breaking the bank. With just a few tools and materials, you can transform your kitchen surfaces with a sleek, industrial-style finish. Follow these steps to create a concrete countertop on a budget.
Materials:
- Ardex Feather Finish
- Large trowel
- Small putty knife
- Mixing bucket and stir stick
- Measuring buckets
- Sandpaper: Coarse (60- or 80-grit), Fine (220-grit), and Very Fine (800-grit; optional)
- Face mask
- Sealant
- Optional: Electric sander, wet/dry vac, paper towels, baby wipes
Step 1: Prepare the Countertop Surface
Clean the existing countertop thoroughly, removing any grease, dirt, or loose material. If there are stains or scratches, smooth them out as much as possible. Use a razor blade to remove any existing silicone sealant to ensure the concrete adheres properly.
Step 2: Sand the Countertop
Use coarse sandpaper (60- or 80-grit) to roughen the surface, allowing the concrete to grip better. After sanding, wipe down the countertop with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris.
Step 3: Mix the Concrete
In a mixing bucket, combine Ardex Feather Finish with water at a 2:1 ratio, stirring until it reaches a peanut butter-like consistency. Avoid splashing or overmixing to prevent air bubbles.
Step 4: Apply the First Concrete Layer
Using a trowel, spread the concrete in small sections (about 1’ x 1’). Work from one corner outward, applying an even layer. Use a putty knife to coat the edges and corners, ensuring full coverage.
Step 5: Smooth and Shape the Corners
For rounded corners, mold the concrete with your fingers once it starts to set. Avoid adding water to smooth it, as this can cause discoloration and weaken the surface.
Step 6: Let the Concrete Dry
Allow the first layer to dry completely for at least 24 hours before proceeding. Avoid disturbing the surface during this time.
Step 7: Sand the Surface
Once dry, sand the entire countertop using coarse sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots. Use a vacuum or damp cloth to remove dust.
Step 8: Seal the Countertop
Apply 511 Impregnator Sealer to protect against moisture and stains. After 24 hours, add a second coat, ensuring full coverage on both the surface and edges. Once dry, apply a topcoat of Safecoat Acrylacq for a polished, scratch-resistant finish.
Step 9: Drying Process
Allow the countertop to cure for at least 24 to 72 hours before using. Once fully set, your sleek, budget-friendly concrete countertop is ready to transform your kitchen.
