How to Make a DIY Canvas Wall Art

Step One: Test

I purchased two large canvas’s and a gray, shimmery acrylic paint. Because I don’t do a ton of painting I needed to take some baby steps, playing around with pattern, design, and paint brushes. I did this on paper. Leave the canvas until I have it all figured out. I landed on this swirl pattern.

Step Two: Start in the Middle

To begin I placed one paint brush dot in the center of the canvas.

I achieved this paint brush dot by laying the brush down. With the wider edge always on the same side.

Pushing it in, not moving it. And then raising it up. This gave a paint brush dot appearance to it. Having the dots go the same  direction is key in this particular design. This allows a uniform look.

Step Three: Start Fanning Out

Once I had the center painted on, I fanned out. Going around the center, making another circle.

I did not measure too much with distance between dots or with the next circle. Trying to keep an eye on how it is coming out.

If there is some issues or some going out too far don’t stress. Bring it back in with the next one and the circle will become corrected. With so much going on, some mistakes is not very obvious. I would paint a few dots before re dipping my paint brush again. This gave a slightly different shade to some of the dots.

Step Four: Switch It Up

The first picture I did a simple circle covering the whole paper. For the next one I wanted to change it up a little and do a few separate circles. I set the next center of the circle off of center to the canvas.

Then fanned out with circles just as before. I stopped after a while and then moved onto to another circle, making more dimension for the separate circles.

That is pretty much it! I have two pieces of fairly large wall art for a very low price. Being a professional artist is not needed at all.

Pro Tip: practice with the paint brush you are going to use before starting on the canvas. Get a feel for how it bends, how much paint you want to put on it. All of that can be figured out before you start on the canvas.

I set them in my dining room, adding a great visual and subtle pattern. It is not enough to overwhelm any other patterns or textures going on in the room. You could mix it up and choose different colors. Do one circle with one like silver and then another with gold. That would be a bit more of a pop and statement.
