A Wooden Cable Spool Became a Spinning Coffee Table With Built-In Book Storage
Most wooden cable spools never make it past the workshop, but she turned one into a spinning coffee table with built-in book storage. A discarded cable drum, ten wooden dowels, white paint, and a rotating swivel plate transformed the industrial reel into a living room piece that stores books around the base while the tabletop rotates.
Cable Spool Becomes the Starting Point
The project begins with a standard wooden cable drum. Its round top, matching base, and hollow center already resemble the shape of a coffee table.
Instead of taking the spool apart, the builder keeps the original structure intact and builds around it.
Wooden Dowels Complete the List
Ten wooden dowels cut to the height of the spool become the outside supports. Their length matches the distance between the upper and lower discs, creating an even pattern around the table.
These dowels will later divide the storage compartments.
Paint Covers the Original Finish
A coat of white paint changes the appearance of the weathered spool. The rough industrial wood begins to resemble painted furniture while still keeping its original shape.
The paint also creates one uniform finish before the remaining pieces are attached.
Dowels Create Open Storage
Holes around the top and bottom guide the placement of each dowel. Once installed, the vertical supports create open compartments large enough for books, magazines, and board games.
The spaces remain accessible from every side.
Swivel Plate Adds a Rotating Top
A metal swivel plate mounts to the center of the tabletop. This simple hardware allows the upper surface to rotate while the lower section stays in place.
The spinning top turns the coffee table into a serving surface that reaches every seat around it.
Hidden Mechanism Disappears Under the Top
Once secured, the swivel hardware sits flush beneath the tabletop and remains almost invisible during everyday use.
Only the smooth rotating motion reveals the added mechanism.
Coffee Table Stores Books From Every Side
With the project complete, books slide into the spaces between the dowels instead of stacking across the tabletop. The open design keeps reading material organized while leaving the top free for everyday use.
A small plant and game pieces finish the display.
Finished Table Combines Storage and a Rotating Top
The finished piece functions as both a coffee table and a circular bookshelf. Books remain within easy reach around the base while the rotating top provides space for drinks, décor, or games.
