A Hill-Country Ranch Home Rooted in Landscape and Light
Dog Run Ranch in Spicewood, Texas is a modern hill-country retreat that blends contemporary comfort with the honest materiality of traditional ranch architecture. Anchored by a majestic oak tree at the top of the site, the 5,200-square-foot home unfolds down the hillside, positioning each pavilion and outdoor space to capture long, open views of the surrounding Texas landscape.
The design by Furman & Keil Architects embraces local stone, exposed wood trusses, and broad overhangs to create a warm, grounded atmosphere. The rhythm of the timber structure defines the main living area, where floor-to-ceiling glass frames sweeping panoramas.
The architecture extends into the land through a series of paths, terraces, and porches that echo classic ranch typologies like the dog-run and carport. Collaborations with Ashby Collective and Ten Eyck Landscape Architects ensure the interiors and gardens carry the same connection to nature, creating a home that feels both timeless and deeply tied to place.
The living room feels expansive and grounded at the same time, defined by its soaring timber-truss ceiling, floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the sweeping hill-country views, and a towering stone fireplace that anchors the entire space with warmth and texture.
The kitchen is treated as a “building within a building,” clad in painted wood and crafted as its own refined architectural element.
Every space balances rustic character with elegant detailing, from the stone fireplace to the serene primary suite and spa-like bathroom.
