Woman Cuts a Hole Into a Woven Basket and It Starts Looking Like a Pendant Light

Pendant lights made from woven materials often cost far more than basic ceiling fixtures. Looking for a different approach, Francesca Stone transformed a woven storage basket into a pendant shade that fits around an existing ceiling light instead of purchasing a new fixture.

The project required only a basket, basic lighting hardware, and a carefully cut opening large enough for the fitting. Rather than replacing the electrical components, the basket became the new outer shell of the pendant.

Once installed, the woven texture introduced pattern, depth, and natural material above the seating area. What started as a storage basket ended as a pendant shade that looks closer to a boutique lighting fixture than something assembled from household materials.

Woven Basket Became the Starting Point

A woven basket provided the structure for the entire project. Its shape, texture, and size already resembled many pendant shades sold in home décor stores.

Using a basket instead of building a shade from scratch eliminated most of the fabrication work and kept the project focused on modifying an existing object.

Opening Was Cut Into the Base

A square opening was marked and cut into the bottom of the basket. The opening needed to be large enough for the pendant hardware while leaving enough woven material to maintain the basket’s shape.

This modification transformed the basket from a storage container into a component that could interact with the existing light fixture.

Existing Pendant Hardware Was Prepared

The light fitting was disassembled so the basket could be positioned around the mounting components.

Removing the hardware first made installation easier and allowed the basket to sit in its final position without forcing or damaging the woven fibers.

Before final assembly, the basket and shade ring were arranged together to confirm the fit.

This step ensured that the opening aligned with the hardware and that the basket would hang evenly once attached.

Pendant Fitting Passed Through the Basket

The light fitting was threaded through the opening and connected to the shade ring inside the basket.

At this stage, the basket started functioning as a lampshade rather than a storage accessory.

The fixture components were reattached and tightened around the basket.

Those connections secured the basket in place and prevented movement once the light was hanging from the ceiling.

Woven Texture Changed the Appearance of the Fixture

The basket introduced texture that the original fixture lacked. Light passed through the woven pattern while the natural fibers softened the appearance of the bulb and hardware.

The woven surface also created more visual interest than a standard fabric or metal shade.

Viewed from the side, the woven construction revealed layers, shadows, and variations in texture.

Those details gave the shade a handcrafted appearance and helped it stand out from mass-produced lighting.

Woven Basket Finished as a Pendant Light

Once installed, the basket introduced texture and natural material that changed the appearance of the fixture without replacing the existing light. The woven surface added depth and contrast against the white ceiling and walls.

LED bulbs are the best choice for projects like this because they generate far less heat than incandescent or halogen bulbs. Smart options such as Philips Hue also allow brightness and color temperature adjustments without changing the fixture.

before and after from simple basket to ceiling lamp

The finished pendant bears little resemblance to the original storage basket. What started as a simple woven container became a ceiling light shade that looks custom-made for the space.

This project shows how a single modification can turn an everyday household item into a functional lighting feature.
