When Walls Become Landscape: The Rock-Built Residence of Serifos

Built into the rugged slopes of Serifos, Xerolithi House by Sinas Architects uses local stone walls that echo the island’s xerolithies—traditional dry-stacked retaining walls. The curving rock façade follows the contours of the hillside, making the home appear as though it has grown out of the mountain itself.

The structure’s flowing lines create a dialogue with the landscape, with each wall rising and falling like terraces carved from the terrain. Covered with native vegetation, the roof disappears into the rocky setting, further blurring the boundary between built form and nature.

Muted finishes and wooden details keep the focus on the stonework and views. The design honors the raw beauty of Serifos, using rock not just as material, but as a means to mirror and extend the landscape.
