Are These Two Most Important Aspects When You Choose a Coffee Table?
A coffee table anchors your living room, but the wrong size can throw off the entire space. Getting the proportions right is the first step.
Size and Proportion
Aim for a table that’s about two-thirds the length of your sofa — long enough to balance the seating, but not so long it overwhelms the room. Height matters too: your coffee table should sit roughly level with your sofa cushions (give or take 1–2 inches). Leave at least 16–18 inches between the table and the sofa for legroom, and about 30 inches between the table and TV stand or wall for walking space.
Shape and Layout
Round or oval tables work well in tight spaces or with sectional seating, while rectangular and square tables suit standard sofas. For large seating areas, consider two smaller tables or a set of nesting tables instead of one oversized piece.
