4 World Trade Center: An Impressive Reconstruction

Four World Trade Center, also known as 150 Greenwich Street or 4 WTC, sits where its original 9-story version was.

Essentials: 4 World Trade Center

World Trade Center’s Building 4 is 978 feet tall with 72 stories and 55 elevators. Its construction began in 2008 and finished in 2013. It has 2.3 million square feet that are occupied by office and retail space.

After the 9/11 attacks, six new towers were planned for the site. Four of the six are completed, and One World Trade Center is the tallest building in NYC. 4 World Trade Center is currently the third tallest building in the complex, but 2 World Trade Center is expected to surpass it.

Architect Fumihiko Maki designed the current 4 World Trade Center. It was first planned to only have 61 stories. Maki wanted it to have a trapezoidal shape for the lower levels and a parallelogram for the upper levels.

During construction in 2012, a crane cable snapped and caused steel to fall on a truck below. Luckily, no one was injured. Construction resumed shortly after. The building cost $1.67 billion to complete, and it was paid for by insurance funds and Liberty bonds.

Original Building

The original 4 World Trade Center was only 118 feet tall with 9 stories. It was built in 1975 on the southeast corner of the property, which is where the new 4 World Trade Center is today.

Architects Minoru Yamasaki and Emery Roth & Sons designed the building. Some tenants included the Commodities Exchange Center, Deutsche Bank, and the New York Board of Trade. It was also the entrance to The Mall at the World Trade Center.

When the Twin Towers (1 World Trade Center and 2 World Trade Center) were destroyed in 2001, 4 World Trade Center sustained a lot of damage from the debris. About two-thirds of the southern part of the building was destroyed. The building couldn’t be fixed and needed to be rebuilt.

In 2003, architect Daniel Libeskind designed the master plan for rebuilding the World Trade Center buildings.
