How High Should a Shower Niche Be?

The standard height for a shower niche in a walk-in shower is 36 to 40 inches from the floor (to the base of the niche). For tub-shower combos, the niche is often placed lower—around 25 to 30 inches from the floor—to make it easier to reach while bathing.

Ideal shower niche height

If you want to make your niche more versatile, such as using it for leg-shaving or for kids, consider placing it slightly lower. However, avoid going too low, as this area is frequently wet and harder to waterproof properly.

Installation TypeHeight from Floor (to bottom of niche)
Walk-in Shower36" – 40"
Tub/Shower Combo25" – 30"

Footrest/Leg Shaving18" – 24"

Aside from height from the floor, you should plan the interior height between niche shelves based on the size of the items you use. Standard shampoo bottles are 8 to 10 inches tall, while larger pump bottles can exceed 10 inches. If your niche has two or more shelves, make sure you leave enough room between them for practical storage, and consider your preferred products before finalizing the design.

If you want your niche to last and look great, avoid installing it on an outside wall or directly in the splash zone under the showerhead. These locations increase the risk of leaks and mold. For both design and durability, the opposite wall is often the safest and cleanest spot.
