Collaborating with local artisans, the architecture firm drew inspiration from traditional northern Thai wooden houses, creating a humble yet expressive structure that opens toward mountain views and lush vegetation.
The exterior is clad in reclaimed, locally sourced timber, carefully charred using the Shou Sugi Ban technique, an ancient Japanese method of wood preservation.
This process involves burning the surface of the wood, then cooling, cleaning, and finishing it with natural oils. The result is a rich, textured finish that not only enhances the timber’s durability and resistance to weather, insects, and decay but also deepens its visual character.
Sher Maker embraces the variations left by the flame, cracks, tonal shifts, and charred textures—to express the raw authenticity of handcrafted architecture.
