I Tried 3 Grout Cleaners and One Removed Years of Brown Buildup From the Floor
Want a bathroom floor that stops looking dirty even after mopping? Grout buildup changes the look of the room long before most people notice the actual problem. The tile can stay clean while the grout absorbs moisture, soap residue, and dirt that settle into the surface over time.
That buildup changes the contrast between the tile and grout lines, which is why floors start looking dull, uneven, and older without major stains or damage. After testing three popular grout cleaners on the same bathroom floor, one product removed far more brown buildup than the others and made the floor look newer without replacing a single tile.
Instead of scrubbing harder, I tested three grout cleaners people keep recommending:
- The Pink Stuff Paste
- Goo Gone Grout and Tile Cleaner
- Black Diamond Ultimate Grout Cleaner
The results were not even close.
What I Tested Them On
All three cleaners were used on ceramic tile with light pearl gray grout that had darkened over time.
The grout had never been sealed, so dirt and moisture absorbed into it much faster than expected.
The issue was not surface dust.
The grout itself had changed color.
The Pink Stuff Removed Some Buildup but Changed the Texture
The Pink Stuff Paste cleaned part of the discoloration, especially near the top layer of the grout.
I applied it with a cloth, scrubbed the lines, and rinsed everything with hot water.
The brown color faded somewhat, but the biggest issue showed up after rinsing.
The grout texture felt rougher.
Because the paste is abrasive, it seemed to wear down the surface slightly while cleaning it. It also took much longer to rinse compared to the other products.
The result looked better than before, but not enough to fully restore the grout color.
What Changed
- some brown buildup lifted
- grout looked lighter in spots
- rough texture appeared after cleaning
- paste stayed trapped in grout during rinsing
It cleaned the surface more than the deeper discoloration.
Goo Gone Cleaned the Tile Better Than the Grout
Goo Gone Grout and Tile Cleaner smelled the best and made the tile itself look noticeably cleaner.
The foam spread easily across the floor and removed residue from the tile surface with very little scrubbing.
The grout was a different story.
After scrubbing and rinsing, most of the darker grout lines still looked brown. Some buildup came off, but the deeper discoloration stayed behind.
The cleaner worked well for surface grime, but not for grout that had absorbed dirt over time.
What Changed
- tile surface looked brighter
- dried residue came off easily
- grout stayed mostly brown
- foam took longer to rinse away
The floor looked cleaner, but the grout still made the bathroom feel older.
Black Diamond Changed the Grout the Most
Black Diamond Ultimate Grout Cleaner worked differently almost immediately.
I sprayed it directly onto the grout, let it sit for a few minutes, and scrubbed lightly with a brush.
The darker buildup started lifting during scrubbing instead of staying trapped inside the grout lines.
That was the first cleaner where the grout started looking closer to its original light gray color.
After rinsing, the difference was obvious.
The tile itself did not change dramatically, but the contrast between tile and grout returned. That made the entire bathroom feel cleaner without replacing anything.
What Changed
- brown buildup lifted quickly
- grout color looked more even
- minimal scrubbing needed
- easy rinse-off
- floor looked newer after drying
The grout stopped looking permanently stained.
Why One Worked Better Than the Others
The biggest difference was penetration.
The grout absorbs dirt below the surface over time, especially if it was never sealed. Surface cleaners improve the tile, but they often leave discoloration trapped inside the grout itself.
Black Diamond spent more time breaking down the buildup inside the grout before scrubbing started.
That changed the result completely.
What I Changed After
I stopped focusing on the tile.
The grout was the part making the bathroom look dirty.
Once the grout lines returned closer to their original color, the entire room looked brighter without changing anything else.
What Actually Made the Difference
- letting the cleaner sit before scrubbing
- cleaning the grout directly instead of the whole floor
- using lighter pressure instead of aggressive scrubbing
- rinsing section by section
- treating buildup early before it darkened further
The biggest surprise was how much the grout alone changed the look of the bathroom.
