Hořec Centre: A Contemporary Alpine Retreat Rooted in Tradition
Set in the snowy landscape of Malá Úpa in the Krkonoše Mountains, the newly redesigned Hořec Centre with help from ADR Studio, blends the character of a 1928 mountain lodge with a strong, contemporary architectural identity. The exterior preserves the original massing while introducing untreated larch cladding and robust concrete extensions that respond to the harsh alpine climate.
Exposed brick, concrete, and steel railings stand alongside warm timber surfaces, creating interiors that feel both functional and refined. The spaces are clean allowing the texture of the materials to take the lead. Retail and café areas showcase simple geometric volumes, black steel detailing, and subtle lighting that maintains the Nordic-influenced minimalism.
The upper levels introduce some of the project’s most memorable architectural moments, A-frame sleeping nooks, exposed roof beams, and netted mezzanine platforms that highlight the building’s original timber structure.
These attic apartments capture the cozy spirit of mountain living while embracing a distinctly modern aesthetic. By merging preserved craftsmanship with contemporary design, the Hořec Centre becomes more than a renovation — it becomes a renewed cultural anchor for the village.
