Floating Courtyard House in Khao Yai Blends Steel, Light, and Landscape
Located in Khao Yai, Thailand, BAAN O+O sits on sloped terrain without altering the landform. The Junsekino Architect and Design elevated the structure, minimizing earthwork and using a compact footprint to reduce impact. This elevated design reinterprets the traditional “tai thun” space beneath Thai homes, creating a shaded, ventilated zone for outdoor living.
The house uses a steel structure to enable cantilevered volumes, giving the appearance of a floating form. Glass walls open the interiors to the landscape, while a central courtyard improves natural light and airflow. The plan is a simple rectangle with circulation around the perimeter, ensuring each room connects to both the courtyard and exterior views.
Passive cooling strategies and restrained material use align the design with sustainability goals. The combination of structural efficiency, climate adaptation, and site respect results in a modern house that quietly integrates with the forested surroundings while offering maximum exposure to light, air, and scenery.
