Custom-designed for a family in Mumbai, India, this apartment is a masterpiece focused around an exquisite and unique staircase. When Arquitectura en Movimiento Workshop started working on this project, they came up with a well-defined program based on the needs and preferences of each member of the family and each space.
The staircase is located at the center of the apartment and was designed as a sculpture. It can be seen from anywhere in the public areas and is the element that connects the rest of the accent features.
Its design and characteristics are replicated in other architectural and design elements such as the ceiling in the living room.
The divider featuring vertical wooden slats placed parallel to each other is also designed to mimic the staircase, both in shape and material.
The ceiling plays a crucial role in here. The architects took advantage of the space between the beams to illuminate the room in a subtle and unique way.
Each room has a difference atmosphere. The dining area, for example, has marble flooring and a neutral and subtle color palette meant to create a calming and inviting ambiance. The ceiling is, once again, the focal point of the décor.
The bedrooms also have their own character and style. The geometry of the overall design make its presence noticed in elements such as the blinds on the windows and the accent wall decorated with custom artwork.
The tree bookshelf in this bedroom is there simply for its artistic and sculptural beauty. The color accents add dynamism to the room and look really great in this simple setting.
A quiet and tranquil space hidden behind a bookshelf divider serves as a work area. It’s decorated with a simple deck and takes advantage of the light coming through the huge windows.
The kitchen is also considered a public space. It’s an area for family reunions and was designed with simple lines and pure materials in order to create a serene and elegant atmosphere. The island doubles as a bar and the wood accents stand out and contrast with the white background.
The apartment also has a pooja room which was designed to be a place for contemplation, harmony and spiritual reunion. The simple décor and the warm materials and colors reflect that.
Integrating some of the traditional elements in a contemporary setting was a challenge. This wall was turned into a focal point meant to emphasize the beauty of the carving work and all the ornate pieces.
