A Prague Loft Where Black Defines the Space
Designed by SMLXL Studio, this loft apartment in Prague shows how black can define a space without overwhelming it.
We’ve previously covered another project by the same studio — a refined apartment in Holešovice — and this new interior continues that architectural precision, using color and contrast as structure.
The existing layout remained intact, but its atmosphere was transformed. A black “box” connects the entry, living area, and bedroom, created by oil-finishing the oak floors, staircase, and doors. The result is a unified rhythm where black becomes an active, organizing element rather than decoration.
Metal details, slanted lines, and perforated mesh curtains add industrial texture while keeping the interior light. Despite its strong material presence, the space feels open and balanced, proving that black can create clarity and calm when handled with restraint.
