Keep the Fun Going After Dark With An Outdoor Gas Fire Pit

Outdoor gas fire pits have become a very popular backyard accessory and it’s no wonder. There’s nothing like a firepit to bring back memories of camping, summer evenings and time spent outdoors with family or friends. As appealing as a bonfire is, however, the mess and fussing with firewood can be a real turnoff for many people, which is what has driven the rising sales of outdoor gas fire pits. While some people may choose to install a permanent custom firepit in the yard, it’s very costly, so most people opt for a pre-built model.

There are many reasons to love an outdoor gas firepit because whether you’re entertaining a crowd or just whiling away a quiet evening with your partner, it’s the ultimate backyard luxury:

Great Things About an Outdoor Gas Fire Pit

They’re perfect for entertaining: When you have people over, a firepit keeps the fun going after dark and is a real draw. Instead of heading inside, people are more likely to linger around the fire to chat. And, there’s just something about a fire that leads to great conversations!

Fire pits increase the use of the backyard. While an outdoor gas firepit may not put out the same level of heat as a crackling wood fire, it does generate warmth that can let you sit around the fire after the sun goes down and the temperature drops. It’s also a great thing to have for autumn afternoons and evenings when you want to sit outside and enjoy the seasonal foliage. Some people even use them in the winter!

An outdoor gas firepit is easy to use. Using a gas fire pit is like using a gas grill: Turn the knob, light the fire and enjoy. There’s no worry about kindling, logs and getting the fire going. With a real woof fire, you have to wait for the fire to burn down enough so that you can put it out safely, which means someone has to stick around. When you’ve had your fill at the end of the evening, just turn off the gas fire and head inside.

A gas fire pit can be safer than wood. Like anything that involves fire, there are safety concerns with a fire pit, but a gas version can be safer. There are no flying embers if the wind picks up and no one will need to worry about getting smoke in their eyes. There’s also no concern about whether you’ve safely doused the fire before you go inside for the night.

Gas firepits are low maintenance – Aside from keeping an eye on the fuel level in your propane tank, there’s no maintenance needed other than covering it up when not in use. Firepits that use real wood need to have the ashes and charcoal cleaned out regularly and might need hosing down or repainting to keep them rust-free.

They are an attractive accessory even when not burning. Especially with the new table styles, gas fire pits add to the décor of your backyard or patio even when you’re not using them. Many table types come with a cover that makes them even more useful. Bowl styles still look chic when not burning.

You can customize the look. An outdoor gas fire pit has to have some sort of fill covering the burner so that it looks attractive. Most models come with lava rocks as a standard fill, but other options are faux logs or a fill made from clear or colored glass pieces, which give the pit a modern, chic look. You can easily substitute a different fill from whatever comes with the firepit you purchase.

Propane varieties are portable  — While you don’t want to be moving these around regularly, if you decide to rearrange your outdoor living space, an outdoor gas fire pit that is not attached to a permanent line can easily be moved to another location. This can be useful if you’re having a large gathering where you need the space where the firepit usually sits.

Some Downsides of an Outdoor Gas Fire Pit

With all the great benefits of an outdoor gas firepit, some people might say that there are a few downsides:

They don’t have the authentic feel of a wood fire. There’s nothing like the sound of crackling logs on the fire to create a rustic outdoor ambiance, which you’re not going to get with a gas fire. Also, you shouldn’t cook over a gas fire pit (although you can roast some marshmallows!). The grease and drippings from food will fall onto the rocks or glass fill in the firepit and can clog the burner.

They generally don’t emit as much heat. A roaring wood fire puts out a lot more heat than a gas fire, especially a if you have a small or tabletop model. While they do provide warmth and are great in the summer, an outdoor gas firepit is not going to do the job of keeping you warm in the dead of winter or on a very chilly night. You’ll probably need to add some blankets!

Propane costs money – Depending on how much you use the firepit, propane can become an added expense greater than a woodburning version would be. Most sources say that an average propane tank – 20 pounds – will burn for 8 or 9 hours with a moderate flame. If you can use it on a low flame setting, it’ll last even longer.

Natural gas outdoor firepits need professional installation. With an outdoor gas firepit, you often have the choice of natural gas or propane. If you choose natural gas, that means your firepit will be permanently connected to a gas line that has to be run and installed by a professional. While this is an added up-front cost, in the long run, however, the fuel is cheaper than propane and you don’t have to worry about ever running out. Of course, your home already has to have natural gas service in order to use this option.

Your firepit has to be connected to a propane tank – With propane fire pits, there’s the issue of the ugly propane tank. Most models of outdoor gas fire pit have a long hose that allows you to place the tank far enough from the fire that it’s not an eyesore. In addition, many fire pits come with a matching tank cover that doubles as a side table. Table styles often house the tank inside the table itself.

When you’re ready to add some fire to your backyard (we are!) here are some of the best outdoor gas firepits:
