I Tried Turning Jam Jars Into a Wall Organizer, and It’s Smarter Than It Looks

I had collected three jars from our favorite jam and didn’t want to throw them away. Instead of leaving them in a cabinet, I mounted them to a wood board and turned them into a wall organizer. The result is simple, functional, and cleaner than most store-bought options.

Here is the exact process and what matters if you want it to look clean and well built.

The project requires very few supplies:

  • A rectangular wood board
  • Sanding block
  • Clear polyurethane spray
  • Three mason jars
  • Leather strip
  • Scissors
  • Upholstery tacks
  • Hammer

The board should be several inches longer than the total width of the jars placed side by side, with space between them.

Preparing the Board

The raw wood needs sanding. Smooth edges make a visible difference in the final result. After sanding, apply a coat of clear polyurethane. This deepens the tone of the wood and protects the surface.

Let the finish dry before moving to the next step. The board sets the tone for the entire piece. If it looks unfinished, the project looks unfinished.

Cutting and Fitting the Leather

Cut one leather strip for each jar. Each strip should be about one inch wide and long enough to wrap around the jar with slight tension.

Test the fit before attaching anything. The jar should slide in without forcing it, but it should not tilt forward once mounted.

Positioning and Securing the Straps

Place the jars on the board to determine spacing. Even spacing keeps the design balanced. Once the layout is set, wrap a leather strip around the jar and mark where the tacks will go.

Remove the jar before hammering. Secure one end of the leather with an upholstery tack. Wrap the strip around the jar position and secure the opposite end.

Repeat the process for each jar. Once all straps are attached, slide the jars into place.

Mounting

Because the jars hold weight, use proper wall anchors or mount into studs. The board itself is light, but glass and contents add load.

This project takes under an hour and uses inexpensive materials. It replaces countertop clutter with vertical storage and turns everyday jars into a fixed system.
