DIY Wooden Crayon Holder
This DIY wooden crayon holder is a simple yet functional project that lets you build a sturdy and stylish storage solution for your desk or craft area, keeping crayons, pencils, and art supplies neatly organized.
Materials:
- 4×4 piece of wood
- Miter saw
- hand drill
- wood bore
- sandpaper
- lacquer
- paintbrush
Step 1: Measure and Mark the Holes
Cut a 4×4 wood block to your desired length (about 2 feet works well for crayon storage). Using a ruler and pencil, evenly space and mark where you want the holes to go. If storing larger items like pens or markers, consider using a 6×6 block for better proportions. Ensure all marks are centered and evenly distributed before drilling.
Step 2: Drill the holes
Using a drill with a wood bore bit, position it at the center of each marked spot and apply firm pressure as you drill down.
Step 3: Sand and Apply Lacquer
Once all holes are drilled (about 3.5 inches deep), sand the entire wood surface and hole edges to smooth any rough spots. Instead of staining, apply a mid-gloss lacquer to enhance the natural wood grain.
Using a paintbrush, apply lacquer in long, even strokes following the wood grain. Avoid using paper underneath, as the lacquer is sticky. Brush inside the holes for a uniform finish. Let it dry completely before adding an optional second coat for extra shine.
Step 4: Add Crayons and Colored Pencils
Once dry, fill the holder with crayons, colored pencils, or other art supplies. The drilled holes provide ample storage while keeping everything neatly organized and easily accessible.
