If the spirit of a Christmas tree is appealing but the time and bother is too much for you, try this minimalist wooden tree. It’s perfect for a tabletop, mantel or desk – or anywhere you want a touch of modern holiday cheer. Take three flat lengths of wood, two the same length and one shorter, and make a triangle as shown. Use wood glue to attach the pieces and secure the joints with binder clips until they are dry. Unclip the tree and then use hot glue to attach it to a flat rectangle of wood to serve as its base. Screw in an eye hook near the top on one side and turn it around. String a single ornament, adjusting the length so that it hangs evenly in the triangular space from the back. Trim off any excess string and you are ready to place the tree. Try adding it to a grouping of holiday candles and greenery – it’s your own modern version of a Christmas tree decoration.
