Unusual Concrete Residence in New Zealand

This odd residence is located on 6 Clermont Terrace, Kelburn Wellington in New Zealand. It’s a contemporary residence that was designed by Simon Twose with some help from builder Brett Mainey who was also the client. The house sits on a 251 square meter site and the residence itself occupies a surface of 300 square meters.

The client basically requested a residence that would differentiate itself from the conventions of the New Zeeland and would have a distinct and original look. It was an interesting, especially since the client was also the builder. He made his desires very clear from the beginning. He wasn’t looking for something easy and boring, but for a design that would be a challenge. And that’s what he got.

Even though the site is very small, the client requested a large house. It was even more difficult to make that possible with all the severe residential rules from the area. As a result, the architects and the client agreed on a courtyard house design that would have three levels. It wasn’t easy to make everyone agree with that because the local rules don’t really promote such designs in that particular area so some negotiations had to be scheduled.

The residence has been built using a lot of concrete. There’s a sort of shell that protects the whole house. The house is separated from the courtyard by glass. The house offers various levels of privacy and intimacy and this allows the inhabitants to shift from one place to another according to their mood.{found on archdaily and pics by Paul McCredie}
