A really cool experimental boutique hotel was recently built in the Kecamatan Ubud region of Indonesia. It was a project developed by architect Alexis Dornier, completed in 2019. Given that a lot of the structures in the area are using a lot of concrete into their designs and look rather lifeless, the idea here was to create something different. In order to achieve that, a more organic palette of materials, colors and finishes was used. The main concept of building the structures up among the treetops makes this boutique hotel stand out and suits the location perfectly.

An indirect advantage of elevating the structures up into the air like treehouses was that the impact onto the landscape is minimal. At the same time, the design suits the whole tropical forest environment. Everything points towards a very special and memorable experience. Of course, not everything is placed up in the air. There’s a recreational area at ground level which incorporates a small sauna, a swimming pool and various sitting areas, with some hammocks spread around between the trees as well. This entire retreat aims to connect the guests with nature and the key to achieving that was a simple and unpretentious style. It’s designed to be different from everything else in this area and it definitely succeeds at that.
