Traditional Living Room Decorating Ideas
Even though modern and contemporary interior designs are the trend, this doesn’t make the other styles obsolete. They remain wonderful options for those that enjoy them. Traditional interior design is often preferred for spaces like the living room because they feel warmer and more inviting than others.
Traditional living rooms usually include a large sofa and two armchairs and they all surround the coffee table. Depending on how many guests you usually need to entertain here, one sofa might not be enough.
Apart from the sofa and the armchairs, traditional living rooms also include a big wooden table. This is basically the dining room table and is often complemented by simple chairs with wooden frames and upholstery.
If the living room has a fireplace, then it would have to be a wood-burning one and the whole room would be organized around it. The sofas, the armchairs and everything else are placed in front of the fireplace.
It’s typical for traditional living room furniture to be ornate. For example, the sofa would have a visible frame with carved details on it and the coffee table would also feature intricate accent details.
It’s common for traditional interiors to include large wooden closets in the living room and wood-paneled walls to match the door and the furniture. Dark-stained wood is preferred because it has a sober and more elegant look.
As far as accessories go, in a traditional living room you can expect to see a large chandelier like this one placed in the center of the ceiling and usually hanging above the coffee table.
Carpets and rugs also play an important role. Traditional decors focus around designs featuring an array of warm colors such as red, brown and yellow and intricate patterns such as the ones you see here.
Long curtains are also rarely missing from a traditional living room. They usually feature some kind of print or pattern and are mostly for show.
Upholstered furniture that features floral patterns or similar motifs is associated with the traditional style. Usually these include sofas and armchairs.
Other indicators of this style in a living room can include the design of the ceiling, the fireplace mantel, the artwork and light fixtures.
