The Whistler public library – an energy efficient structure with a friendly design

Located in Whistler, British Columbia, this is one of the busiest libraries in the area. Here, on the coastal mountains of western Canada, the views are splendid and they add to the charm of the library, making it stand out. The library opened its doors on the 26th of January, 2008. It acts as a bridge between the fabric of Whistler Village and the adjacent community park.

Its design is modern but also sustainable. The library was designed to blend in as much as possible and to become a part of the landscape. Natural materials were used in this sense as well as natural colors for the exterior. Its sustainable design was also a modern response to the landscape. The library was built using a series of prefabricated wood panels for the roof as well as locally quarries basalt. In addition, it has a beautiful sloping green roof. This wonderful project was developed by Hughes Condon Marler Architects.

This beautiful structure was the first LEED® Gold certified library in Canada and the winner of several awards. It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind project. It features modern wood features and it has an L-shaped plan. The north side of the plot on which the library was built features skiing/biking greenway, a pedestrian walkway and a children reading center. In addition, the views are amazing and they can definitely inspire you.
