The Paper Chair by Vadim Kibardin

When you think of a chair, more exactly of the materials that a chair can be made of, the first choices are usually wood, plastic, metal, maybe marble or fabric and a number of rare materials as well. But what would definitely not be in that list is paper. That’s because it is almost inconceivable to imagine a chair made of paper. However, designer Vadim Kibardin has found a way to do it.

This is the Paper Chair. As its name suggests, it’s a chair made of paper. It’s not a metaphor, it’s real. The chair that Vadim Kibardin has designed is actually made of 37 paper and cardboard layers. It was created by arranging the sheets one by one until the desired height was achieved. It sounds simple but it wasn’t. The chair is the result of a series of experiments with various materials and an exploration of the designer’s ‘chaos and sequence’ theory.

As it turns out, paper can be used for more than writing and packing things. It can actually be used to make furniture. It was an ingenious and daring project developed in an attempt to understand the beauty of disorder and to achieve balance in a way it’s never been achieved before. The paper gives the chair a unique texture and character. It can have personalized forms and they can be creating by simply chopping and rumpling the paper layers that were used to make it.
