The innovative Decafé Lamp by Raúl Laurí

The Decafé Lamp is a very interesting creation but, more than that, it’s a reinterpretation of the design. The Decafé Lamp was created by Spanish designer Raúl Laurí. It’s an experimental product but it will hopefully be mass produced very soon. The most interesting aspect related to this lamp is the fact that it’s made from recycled coffee grounds.

The new composite material used to make the Decafé Lamp uses recycled coffee grounds. It’s a new and innovative way of taking advantage of the renewable and biodegradable attributes that coffee presents. The experimental lamp is shaped like a cup and it emanates the aromatic smell of coffee. This is a design that you admire but also feel with your other senses. Another interesting aspect about this lamp is that it has a switchless design. If you want to turn it on, all you have to do is pick it up and place it on the base it comes with.

The idea was very ingenious. A cord or a switch would have altered the design of the lamp and would have made it less coffee-like. The Decafé Lamp was presented at the Salone Satellite Awards during Milan Design Week 2012. There it took first place, an award given mostly for the design’s development, research and experimentation with sustainable materials. Hopefully the lamp will be just a starting point for the designer. It would be nice to soon find this lamp in shops and even to someday see a whole collection based on the same concept.
