The EXO Chair Inspired from Insects

Recently I’ve become quite interested in insects and everything that has to do with them, so when I saw this unusual chair I couldn’t stop making the connection between its shape and the exoskeleton of an insect. In fact, this is also the inspiration source for the chair’s design.

The EXO chair has been designed by Brazil-based Fetiche Design and created for Schuster. The shape of the chair resembles the exoskeleton of an insect, the part of their body meant to protect and cover the internal organs. Unlike in the case of humans, theirs is on the exterior for practical reasons. Like the real deal, the chair is also made of several small pieces that when put together form a sort of puzzle.

If you watch closely the exterior, you’ll notice that it’s formed of several triangles glued together. You can see the process on a small-scale model. Still, I can’t understand what’s the deal with that little hole. It looks strange and even funny but I guess it’s there for realism. In order to continue the design in the same direction, the legs have been rounded up and resemble, more or less, the legs of an insect. I can see how this is an unusual and interesting piece of furniture but I think they could have done something more spectacular if they really wanted to make clear the relation between the chair and the insect.
