The Contemporary Hill-Maheux Cottage by Kariouk Associates

The Hill-Maheux Cottage is a small weekend and holiday retreat located in Val-des-Monts, Quebec, Canada. It’s a contemporary building that serves a refuge for its owners, a place where they can go when they need privacy and when they want to get away from everything for a while. This contemporary cottage was a project by Ottawa-based design studio Kariouk Associates and it was completed in 2010.

Even though the clients primarily wished for privacy and they requested an introverted home, they also wanted for it to share a strong connection with the outdoors. As a result, the architects came up with a design that allows the owners to take full advantage of the views and forested site. Even though this is a weekend and holiday retreat, the clients to someday permanently move there and then pass the property on to their daughter. This means that the residence needed to be functional and flexible and to allow future expansions and changes in terms of design.

The cottage has a contemporary design and a very simple structure. It has two main volumes. One of them includes the living spaces and the other houses the bedrooms, bathrooms and the storage facilities. The public area is connected to an elliptical loft that belongs to the client’s daughter. The loft volume is situated above the entry and completes the whole structure. Overall, this is a simple but very well though residence that will serve as a family gathering place for many years to come and might even eventually become a full-time home.
