Textile factory turned into a patisserie shop in Japan
This is Patisserie Uchiyama. It was built in what used to be a textile factory. The building was created more than 90 years ago but, at one point, it lost its functionality. In 2010, it got renovated and transformed into the patisserie shop that it is today. That was a project by Takato Tamagami.
The patisserie is located in Azumacho, Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture, in Japan. It occupiers a surface of 682.32 square meters. As many other old buildings from Kiryu-shi, this one had a saw-shaped roof. It was a symbolic detail that was hidden by the past renovations. During this last project, the roof was revealed again and became a visual part of the design. The architects didn’t make many drastic changes. They followed the original design and only made everything seem more modern. The roof and the building itself were restored and updated, thus getting a fresh look but maintaining the original shape and design.
Externally, the building is very simple and doesn’t really stand out by anything. It features a combination of black and white structures and an overall simple design. Internally, the patisserie is modern and has a minimalist look. It features the same black and white combination, complemented by wooden furniture with natural finishes.
