A Tall and Slender Mountain Cabin Featuring A Burnt Wood Cladding

Inspired by the typical houses found in the Chiang Mai region of Thailand, this mountain cabin has a rather peculiar geometry created by studio Sher Maker

The cabin occupies a small clearing and is surrounded by trees and lush vegetation

It has a rectangular floor plan but it’s long, narrow and two-storeys tall, topped with a slightly slanted metal roof and clerestory windows underneath that wrap around all four sides. The exterior of the cabin is opaque and clad in wood on three sides while the remaining fourth side remains open and frames the beautiful views.

The wood used for the exterior walls was all locally sourced and then treated using a special technique which involves burning the planks. The result is wood that’s more weather-resistant and better-suited for mountain cabins or exterior building in general.

In addition, the burned wood has a beautiful dark patina and each plank is unique in that regard. These little differences or imperfections if you would are actually emphasized and used to give this build the human element, the charm that makes it look lived in and cozy.

The interior of the cabin is definitely worth talking about as well. Given the long and narrow floor plan, all the spaces are placed in a line and circulation between them is somewhat limited. Still, this doesn’t make the cabin feel cluttered or tiny.

The rooms are organized on two floors. The ground floor houses the social area with the living room, kitchen, a bathroom as well as the entrance and a raised outdoor deck. The upper floor is the more private part of the cabin and this is where a beautiful bedroom with a nice view of the tree canopies is situated.
