Modern Residence With A Bridge-Like Living Room

We’ve seen a lot of houses with cantilevered volumes and they were all special and interesting in their own way. However, things are a bit different in the case of the Shallard House designed by Lat Forty Five architects and located in Dunedin, New Zealand.

The house was completed in 2010 and has a very unusual design. The living room is elevated and suspended just like a bridge. The architect in charge reveals that this unusual detail was done out of necessity in order to maximize the views of the lake and to offer privacy. The fact that the site was narrow and surrounded by other properties meant the team had to be inventive and this was the solution they found.

The living room is supported at either end by symmetrical cube-like volumes. The area under the living room is an al fresco social area for dining and entertaining guests. It features a barbecue area and wooden flooring that makes it feel really welcoming.
