Spring Kitchen Makeovers That Don’t Break The Bank

Updating a kitchen to give it a new look is usually an expensive project to take on. Kitchens are full of costly equipment and usually the layout has been designed around them. Therefore, any significant change that you want to make to the look of the room will usually involve some restructuring. Buying new fitted storage units, to replace ones that have been removed, is not the most thrifty way of making over a kitchen.

If you want a new look, but don’t want to go to the time or expense of a major overhaul, there are some cost effective design changes that you ought to consider. These, more inexpensive options, tend to cause a good deal less disruption than a new fit out and won’t break the bank. Many of these makeover tips don’t require specialist tradesmen to turn your ideas into reality.

So long as you have some instinctive artistic skill or some experience with DIY they can make your kitchen look as though it has had a complete new look over the course of a weekend. As spring gets into gear, it can be a great time to give your kitchen a little decoration that will refresh and rejuvenate it.

Whitewash Your Cabinets.

If you are tired of the look of your old kitchen cabinets then don’t think about ripping them out until you have considered other, less costly options. Cabinets don’t tend to be so overused that they really need replacing. One simple idea is to fit the storage unit with new fascias. Plain white cabinet fascias will work with just about any pre-existing color scheme that your kitchen has been designed with. For an even less expensive option, simply paint the cabinets white. To do this, it is best to remove the doors and shelves and paint them outside on a sunny day, since this really speeds up the process.

Stencil Updates.

Stencilling is not for everyone, but a well thought out design will work wonders in a kitchen that has become tired and drab looking. A good approach to take, if you are new to stencilling, is to work in one area of the room until you build confidence. Perhaps start with a floral stencil above a recess or a stove. Many stencils are available to download if you don’t want to design your own. Stencils look cool above windows and on ceilings as well as walls. So don’t just stick to the obvious when making your kitchen over with them.

Hand Painted Tiling.

If you have an area of boring splash back tiling, then why not update it with hand painted tiles? If you have an artistic spirit, paint your chosen design right on top of the tiles that are already fitted. If you are less confident, buy some hand painted tiles and use them to replace the section of splash back that will show off the new design best. Even if you purchase hand painted tiles, it won’t cost the earth to make over a small section of the kitchen.

Refurbished Counter Tops.

Another relatively cheap way of making your kitchen look like it is newly fitted is to replace your counter tops. Some fitters specialise in installing veneers over your existing ones, so you don’t even need to replace them. But why not experiment with new materials for your counter tops, like glass or ceramic tiling? If your budget will allow it, change your counter tops and the fascias of the cabinets beneath them. Everyone will think that your kitchen has been entirely fitted from new.
