A Small Holiday Retreat With African and Mexican Design Influences
There’s a beautiful place in Mexico in the Sayulita area which got a remodel earlier this year. The Pelicans Villa is a holiday retreat surrounded by lush vegetation and has its own private beach. It can accommodate up to 20 guests so it’s not massive which is what makes it so inviting and cozy in the first place. There are 8 cabins in total as well as a series of common areas at the top of the hill with a kitchen, a dining room and a lovely sitting area. All 340 square meters were redesigned by Main Office.
The design strategy here was to preserve some of the original African aesthetic of the retreat which reflects the heritage of its previous owner native to South Africa. These elements were mixed with Mexican details and the result was an eclectic new aesthetic with a very unique character. The materials used throughout the remodeling process were locally sourced and include a lot of indigenous Parota wood which was used for the room dividers, the door and window frames and some of the custom furniture.
The interior walls which were previously colored were painted white in order to create a clean and neutral backdrop for the gorgeous views. Some of the most charming spaces are the outdoor ones like the exterior shower or the yoga platform.
