Seaside Villa in Cape Town Offers Six Levels of Oceanview Living

A magnificent seaside site in South Africa now has a home that capitalizes on the terrain and the views in the most spectacular way.  It’s also the ideal home for a family, with six floors of laid-back, luxuriously designed living spaces, ranging from a serene outdoor courtyard and pool level to a top-tier bedroom section.

Seaside Villa in Cape Town

Horizon Villa is a luxury residence in Cape Town overlooking the Atlantic seaboard in Bantry Bay. The property already had an existing house, but it did not take advantage of its location and woefully underutilized the site’s greatest characteristics. ARRCC set out to make the most of the unique landscape by creating a home where the client’s family with young children could enjoy an outdoor lifestyle, remain shielded from the prevailing winds and still optimize the ocean views. In fact, the clients wanted to make use of every possible part of the site while still creating privacy in this densely populated part of Bantry Bay.

“Our brief was to create a comfortable family home, uncluttered and functional, yet at the same time act as a foil to the dramatic architectural envelope,” says ARRCC director Mark Rielly.

The ultimate design of the house was primarily driven by the need to create a family home with the kitchen, living room and dining room contained in a single space.

The secondary living area was designed to be a dramatic space for entertainment, located one level below the family living areas so that the homeowners can host large groups of friends.

The pool terrace includes both covered and uncovered areas to maximize the opportunities for relaxing around the pool. The entertainment lounge has a spacious bar installed next to the outdoor grilling area. The western edge of the pool deck features a dramatic gazebo structure so that the owners can enjoy their unrivaled ocean views by day or by night.

Throughout the interior of the home, the finishes are rich and varied: They include including timber cladding along with and richly colored mosaic accents. Some of the internal walls — as well as external ones — feature textured stone cladding, which contrasts against the roughness of the off-shutter concrete soffit in the living room, dining room and kitchen.

The glass walls of the living space slide open fully to erase all boundaries between indoors and out. The divide between the spaces is further erased with this sleek garden courtyard that has a water feature and sculpture.

The two levels that contain the main living spaces — both the family area and the entertaining level — are centrally located on the fourth and fifth floors the home’s vertical arrangement.

The main double-volume living level is a dynamic and sculptural composition comprising the interplay of volumes, floor levels, elements and planes, says ARRCC Director Mark Rielly. The entire space relates directly to the expansive sea views and is framed by the bright red rectangular chimney flue and a wall clad in Nero Marquina marble.

The homeowners have an expansive and eclectic art collection, and the home’s design allows it to play an integral role in the interior decor It also adds a dynamic element to the contemporary architecture of the home’s overall structure.

Throughout the house, the neutral color palette is centered around walnut wood, charcoal linen and earth tones that are enhanced and softened with plenty of texture, which comes in the form of items like vintage leathers and softly woven carpets.

All of these components are seen in this dramatic living room that highlights easy-care leather sofas and enough unique pieces to distinguish the room without taking away from the one-of-a-kind views.

Sunlight floods the entire living space and the balcony includes a glass rail so that nothing impedes the ocean view. In addition, outdoor seating includes hanging retro bubble chairs, whose clear shell also preserves a wide view. The bright red fireplace flue is the ideal pop of color juxtaposed against the blue of the sea and sky.

With six floors of living, the home also features a very necessary glass lift that connects everything vertically. On the outside, there’s also an external service staircase for bringing in large or bulky items, or for repair and maintenance needs.

The main bedroom and two children’s bedroom suites are located at the very top, on the sixth floor of the home. They also boast expansive 180-degree views of the ocean. The style of the main bedroom is sleet and uncluttered, yet totally made for comfort. The spacious and Zen-like bathroom has a long vanity with double sinks, a huge shower, and glass doors that open to a private outdoor feature.

The master bedroom suite includes a workspace that overlooks the family area, offers a view of the ocean and has an ideal set-up for working from home.

Overall, this South African home may be the epitome of the perfect luxury family home thanks to its concept of together but separate along with the architectural design that really does make the most of the side and the views.
