Olson Kundig Architects’ Beautiful House in Oregon

Olson Kundig Architects have designed a beautiful and contemporary farmhouse. The house is a response to the client’s interest in Philip Johnson’s Glass House. Located in Northeast Oregon, near the client’s existing barn, the house is a very modern and eco-friendly place to live in.

The house looks like a giant box and it is siting on a 80 acre site. It has huge floor to ceiling windows that, not only, take advantage of passive solar heat gain from the low-angled winter sun, but they also keep the hot summer sun from entering , due to the roof. Another use of the big windows is to bathe the house in as much natural light as possible.

Although the farmhouse is constructed out of glass, it seems to fit in with the architectural vernacular local to the Pacific Northwest. It is well balanced by the wood-framed barn next to it. The 1,450 square feet residence has a contemporary interior design which is supported by the beautiful surrounding views of wheat fields and mountains. It has a neutral color palette that is completed by the powerful colors of the environment. Moreover it has a gorgeous fireplace in the living area that acts as the focal point.

The Glass Farmhouse is a superb building set in a calm and beautiful place and can provide comfort in all weather conditions.
