Freshen Up Your Home for Spring with the latest Decor Ideas from NYNOW
New materials, innovative designs and fun items for the home are among the many design inspirations Homedit found at the recent NYNOW show. Brands big and small presented their latest wares for home and contract and we found lots to like at this winter’s edition. Here is a collection of some of our favorite new pieces that you can include in your home’s décor to freshen up the interior for 2018.
Furniture Big and Small
Jonathan Adler never disappoints and this time around we were in love with this graphic grouping that features new beaded wall art and chic black and white accessories from the Canaan Collection. The cocktail table is from the new Electrum series and the Ultra chair and ottoman are both upholstered in a glam graphic print and supported by brass legs. They were created with “nod to Italian modernism and a hint of Space Age futurism.” Any of these pieces would be perfect for adding a fresh pop of mod to an existing living space.
The Bardot three-drawer chest by Bungalow 5 is ideal for storage or in place of an entry console. Done in a sophisticated gray lacquered grasscloth, its finish has texture and depth, making it a versatile piece for any room. Above the chest, the Romano mirror in sapphire blue is functional but also a glamorous accent thanks to the faceted frame. Inspired by the colored mirrors that were popular in the 1940s, the company has revitalized the concept with a modern version.
With two trending colors dominating this living room grouping, we were hooked. Millennial pink and sophisticated sage green pair up in a serene but slightly feminine living room by Worlds Away. The Alexander Chest anchors the setting, which includes the Dominic swivel chair that sports a brass base and the geometric Matthew occasional table. Delaney lamps atop the chest have three tiers and gold marbling.
This welcoming corner design is by Roost, known for its global products that are crafted from natural materials using artisanal techniques and recycled materials. Organically shaped pendants hang above a woven chair, surrounded by a number of very attractive natural looking planters. The rustic wood of the stools — which can be used as tables — and the frame of the mirror give the entire setting a relaxing and calming vibe.
Sometimes, a daybed is more fitting than a small sofa or a lounge chair. This Ludwig Daybed from Mr. Brown of London is finished in shagreen and a neutral textile, but is also available in more glamorous fabrics like velvet. It is shown with some fun and quirky side tables, including the new Salamanca, with its elongated base, dotted with Swiss cheese-like holes.
Comfortable, sophisticated and a little different, the pieces from Portugal’s Bunakara by Joana Aranha are hand-crafted. This sofa consists of a frame with a woven support and luxurious, puffy cushions in an elegant blue ticking stripe. Natural linen pillows make a fitting accent. A distinctive element on all of the company’s furniture is one leg that is always painted in a different color. Here, the right-hand leg is done in a deep blue that complements the upholstery.
The same webbing on a frame forms the base of Bunakara’s new daybed, which the company says has been very popular. The Indian-style daybed and mattress are perfect for lounging and relaxing. The basic design is versatile and different from the usual daybeds that you see. The quality of materials used and careful hand construction make these special items.
A great coffee table is essential and this two-tiered style from the Jan Barboglio Collection is topped with the Primavera Railroad candle holder. The five mouthblown green glass holders add color to the setting and enhance the industrial feel of the Cafe d’Torreon table. The table surface is hand-carved Torreon stone and the legs end in round ball feet. Placed atop the graphic striped rug, it is a dramatic arrangement. Also, the series of candle holders is an eye-catching choice for a dining table as well.
This coffee table is definitely for lovers of wood. The Davenport Table from Made Goods is crafted from strong acacia wood, which has been inlaid to form a unique design. The contrasting rings of color in the wood slices give the table a graphic look. The way the wood continues down over the base is particularly nice. It is a perfect centerpiece for a globally inspired living room or casual family room.
A very different method for turning repurposed wood beams into furnishings involves pouring molten glass over the top of the damaged end of the post inside a mold. Fuel Glassworks of Canada, which creates these, also chars the wood for more depth. Most interestingly, the glass can lift off to show the textured underside that comes from the jagged relief of the wood underneath. Small but dramatic, one of these table would be a conversation piece as well as a very fiction end table.
Award-winning pieces from Ngala Trading feature indigenous African designs and materials, such as this shaggy leather tub chair. It is upholstered in a new custom textile and the exterior is covered in a fab suede or leather fringe. The combination of lively fabric and funky, long fringe is a quirky combination that makes for a real showpiece chair — that’s also extra comfortable!
Roberta Schilling presents pieces that are created by talented artists in Brazil in a collection that is made of bold and special contemporary pieces mixed with fine Brazilian colonial antiques. This elegant bench is upholstered in hair-on-hide and features unique v-shaped legs at each end of the block-shaped piece. The warm natural wood complements the tone of the hide nicely. It is a wonderful choice for a living room or hall, or perhaps even at the foot of the bed in a master suite.
We love a good bar cart and while there are plenty to choose from, we really like the perforated metal shelves of this spare model from Bloomingville. The patterned metal adds interest and casts a wonderful shadow on the floor. The shelves are practical and the design has a light and airy feeling. Whether you want this to serve as bar or tea cart is up to you, however its design makes it suitable for use in almost any room of the home.
Lighting
Ameico’s lights might look like regular full-size table lamps, but a peek from a sideways perspective reveals that they are not round and full. LED light running through the grid that forms the lampshade, gives the illusion that it is a full, round shade. The unusual design by Tel Aviv-based Studio Cheha makes it a conversation piece for sure, however it’s also a great lighting solution in an area where space is tight. Straight on, it has the full visual impact of a regular table lamp, but from the side the slim profile allows it to fit in a narrower space.
An elongated shape and a delightful range of colors make these table lamps from the Brass Brothers very versatile. The young brand is from Tuscany in Italy and aims for “an elaborate vintage feel with a lavish and flawless contemporary air.” Designers and artisans in Florence creates the pieces, which range from more traditional designs to this contemporary style of lighting fixture. Great for a desk, side table or nightstand the colored matte finish is very of-the-moment.
A child’s room needs lighting and we believe it should also be stylish. This floor lamp from Gautier fits the bill, with its three-legged base and modern, Nordic-style sensibility. The unique shade and holder give it a different look. It would work in a child’s bedroom, in a playroom over a table or in a reading nook.
Further toward the contemporary end of the spectrum, this table lamp from Bungalow 5 has a gravity-defying profile. The Packard Lamp is from a new range of items that has chrome accents. The style of the lamp is modern and it relies on engineering for its balanced nature. The base is available in the nickel pictured here, or in brass, and the glass can be ordered in black or white.
Rugs
Innovative floor coverings abounded and we were particularly taken by the bright colors of these Mad Mats. They are even more appealing because the fair trade rugs are made from recycled plastics like soda and water bottles and don’t fade, stain or mildew. Inside or out, they are colorful and really make a bright base for a decor scheme, whether it’s inside the house or in an outdoor living space for the summer season. There is a very large selection of patterns to choose from and quite a few resemble high-end Asian carpet designs. And, perhaps the best feature is that they are truly care-free additions to a home’s decor.
Best known for innovative table mats and textiles, Chilewich in recent years has branched out into amazingly durable and stylish floor mats. We’ve long been fans of the chic, easy care Plynyl tabletop products and now the growing range of floor options, like this new Market Fringe collection. The tweedy look was achieved by twisting multiple strands of tonal colored fibers. The added fringe gives them the look of a fabric rug without any of the fuss or bother.
Wall Decor
What fun is a design show without some whimsical wall decor? We’ve seen everything from upholstered deer heads to crochet-covered versions and others bedecked in iridescent beetle wings. This time, we found some awesome papier-mâché animal heads, like this crowned walrus from Cody Foster & Co. The realistic look combined with quirky details like the crown make these wall pieces just plain fun additions to a room’s decor. The back story of the company is also very cool. It’s a quintessential Midwestern US small-town, family-run business, located in a rustic town of 2,800 residents in the Sand Hills region of north-central Nebraska.
Home Accessories
Stylish storage and accessories are a must for every home and Homedit found some really useful and interesting items at NYNow. First, we have stylish and safe storage for your sunglasses — or other items — from Umbra. Soft suede slings nestle your precious designer sunglasses in an easy-access holder that is chic enough to sit out on your desk, dresser or hall table. Just grab your sunnies as you go out the door!
Just about everyone has magnets to hold important notes on a board or refrigerator, but now those magnets can sport some serious bling. Jeweled magnets from three by three of Seattle will be available this year. The design is an expansion of their knob magnets, which are easy to move around and add dimension to a note board. Choose the size you need and a favorite color to add extra pizazz to an organized space.
Perhaps not as “useful” as blinged-out magnets, but highly desirable are home accessories that add panache, like these porcelain decor pieces by Jamie Hayon for Vista Alegre. Named Folkifunki, the collection is a collision of Portuguese folk culture and Hayon’s imagination. The pieces are bright and fun and would add a touch of whimsy to a living or dining room. The unusual silhouettes add to the light-heartedness of the design and fit with Hayon’s hallmark graphic style.
A little more traditional but very spectacular, these plates from Vista Alegre are by iconic fashion designer Christian Lacroix. The entire collection is called “Love Who You Want” and melds contemporary and haute couture design elements. The large charger plate is the Jungle King and the smaller plate shown is Monseigneur Bull. The tableware is strong in its colors and statement, fun in its sense of humor, and totally over the top, as Lacroix has always been.
For a patio gathering or an indoor party, paper lanterns can add a festive dose of fun. Two’s Company has a range of patterns in a versatile set of blue shades. These are perfect for an Asian-themed dinner or a seaside patio party. Or, hang them in a mass from the ceiling to create a balloon-like effect that is lush and plentiful.
Similarly, paper products can help make a table setting special — and were not talking about the usual paper plates and napkins. Entertaining is about making guests feel special, so we’re all for using the good china and cloth napkins, but adding elements like a bright, springtime mat and matching place card from Hester & Cook elevate a plain table setting to something extraordinary. Using these items lends a seasonal element to the table without having to invest in seasonal textiles or china.
Big or small, here are lots of ways to freshen up the home with new designs. No matter if you aren’t completely redoing a room — just adding a fresh decor item, new rug, or just some tabletop accessories can bring a feeling of renewed enthusiasm for your living space. Sometimes all it takes is a little change to revitalize a setting you already love.
