Nolah Sleep VS Brentwood Mattress: What are the Differences?

Buying a new mattress should be a cause for celebration. After all, we love owning new things, don’t we? However, the decision-making process that stands behind buying a new bed is a very complex one, especially if you consider the fact that you’d like to have a mattress that can last at least one decade.

With the variety of new options that are now available on the market, memory foam beds still have a solid database of fans that will not turn to any other materials or construction. Foam is known for providing superior comfort and pressure point relief, particularly because it is a material that literally shapes to your body.

Today, we’re going to go over two solid players in the all-foam mattress niche: Nolah Sleep and Brentwood. Because each of these two players has more than just one type of mattress for sale, we are going to focus on their flagship all-foam options: the Nolah Original 10 mattress and the Brentwood Cypress Memory Foam bed.

 A Closer Look

Even by the little information that you have available in the table above, you can probably get the big picture and spot some of the main differences between the Nolah Original 10 and the Brentwood Cypress 11-inch memory foam mattress. While both of these beds feature a construction that’s made exclusively from foam, the fact that they share a few similarities does not make them similar mattresses at all.

The Nolah Original is designed to be a softer mattress that’s suitable for people who like to sleep on their sides. It’s a bed that performs exceptionally well when it comes to alleviating pressure points in all possible sleeping position, although it might be a little too soft for stomach sleepers and not provide them with the support they need.

Brentwood’s mattress, on the other hand, is one inch thicker and available in two thickness options. It is a much more affordable mattress compared to the Nolah Original, and to other similar all-foam beds as well. Thanks to its charcoal-infusion, this bed surprises sleepers from the get-go, approaching a more original way of temperature neutrality that hot sleepers crave for. Without further ado, let’s dive in and see what each of these mattresses can do.

Nolah Original

Cost

The Nolah mattress is one of the most inexpensive beds that you can get your hands on. Prices start off at $619 for a Twin-sized bed and can go all the way up to $1,119 for a Cal King bed. However, Nolah has frequent discount periods, so the chances of you buying the Original 10 mattress on sale are pretty high, especially if you check their website frequently.

Construction

The Nolah Original is a 10-inch mattress that’s made up of three layers that blend well together to provide contouring and support. The cover is made entirely out of polyester and viscose, and it manages to be really soft to the touch and somewhat breathable as well.

The top layer of the mattress consists of two inches of what Nolah calls the AirFoam: a layer that’s designed to provide comfort and pressure relief, although we are a bit surprised about the fact that it doesn’t come with a gel-infusion or some additional cooling measures. As you know, one of the downsides of foam mattress is the fact that they tend to retain quite a lot of heat.

The transition layer is also made with one inch of polyfoam, but this time with a higher density in order to help transition between the soft foam above and the harder foam that’s used in the support layer. Speaking of support, we’re dealing with seven inches of HD polyfoam, a layer that gives the bed structure and stability and helps support the combined weight of the sleeper and the bed itself.

Shipping

The Nolah Original mattress is a bed in the box that ships all across the continental US. While they do not offer white glove delivery services, their shipping is free. All of their mattresses are shipped via UPS Ground and are made to order. That means it takes about three to five business days for them to put your mattress together, and then another maximum of five days for the company to send the mattress your way. Upon shipping, you will receive a tracking number so you’ll always know the current status of your order.

Where It’s Made

All of Nolah’s mattresses are made on American land. The company currently operates eight different factories all across the US territory. Unlike some other big mattress brands that we know (wink wink), Nolah also produces the materials that are used inside the mattress on US land.

Special Features

One of the remarkable things about the Nolah Mattress is its AirFoam™. It is a rare case to find memory foam without additional cooling measures that does a decent job of not making you sweat in the middle of the night. Advertised as temperature neutral, the Nolah is a mattress that can keep you cool at night, unless you’re a really hot sleeper, in which case there are better options out there.

Firmness Level

The firmness level of a mattress is never an exact science, but it can paint a picture for the customer to at least have an idea of what to expect in terms of how the bed feels when you sleep on it. Expert testing has revealed that the Nolah Original 10 mattress has a firmness rating of about 5 – 5.5 out of a maximum 10, making it a rather soft mattress compared to the average firmness which is considered to be 6.5.

Because of its construction and firmness rating, the Nolah mattress does an excellent job in relieving pressure points for people who like to sleep on the side, as they are the one who most “suffer” if a mattress is too firm and allow the hips and the shoulders to sink into the surface of the bed deep enough as to provide proper contouring.

Sleep Trial

The Nolah Original mattress offers you 120 nights of free sleep trial, during which you can decide if you feel comfortable enough to sleep on this bed for years. The company does require that you sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights in order to give the foam a chance to adapt to the shape of your body. Should you wish to initiate a return, you can be eligible for a full refund, and all mattresses are donated to charity or properly recycled in specialized centers.

Warranty

This mattress comes with a 15-year warranty, which is already better compared to the average 10 years that memory foam mattress manufacturers typically provide upon buying their products. The mattress needs to be used with a proper foundation in order to make sure you don’t void the warranty. If Nolah decides that your mattress is eligible for repair or replacement, they will handle the shipping costs.

Construction

The Brentwood Cypress Memory Foam mattress starts with a cover that’s made from a polyester and spandex blend. Because of the spandex addition, the cover is quite stretchable. The side panels of the mattress are made from a blend of wool and polyester.

As far as the comfort layer is concerned, this mattress comes with one inch of charcoal-infused memory foam. Charcoal infusion is basically considered as an upgrade to the traditional gel infusion that we see in the upper layers of a memory foam mattress. It can regulate the temperature of your body in order to help you sleep comfortably, temperature-wise.

The transition layer of the mattress is made from polyfoam and comes in a convoluted shape that we’d like to see more of. The role of this layer is to prevent the sleeper from sinking into the mattress too deep. The core of this mattress lies in eight inches of HD polyfoam. This helps provide stability to the bed and gives the mattress its shape.

Shipping

The Brentwood Cypress Memory Foam mattress only ships to the continental US states. While shipping is free of charge, the company does provide its buyers with the option of going with white glove delivery services. If you simply want your new mattress set up, you will have to pay a flat fee of $199, but if you also want them to take the old mattress off your hands, it will cost you an additional $76.

The company ships its mattresses using the FedEx delivery services. For the most part, mattresses are shipped between three and five business days from the moment your order has been confirmed. However, it could take an additional 14 days for the mattress to reach its destination, so you’ll have to be patients.

Where It’s Made

All of Brentwood’s mattresses are made in America.

Special Features

One of the main things that stand out when you first look at the specification of this memory foam mattress is the charcoal infusion in the comfort layer. Charcoal has long been advertised as a way to promote temperature regulation, a much-needed feature in beds that are made from heat-retaining foam.

Firmness Level

You should know that the Cypress Memory Foam mattress is actually available in two thickness options, and each of these has a different firmness level. Since today we’ve focused on the 11-inch version of this bed, let’s stick to that firmness rating. The 11-inch Cypress mattress has a firmness rating of 7, which makes it rather firm, at least when compared to the Nolah Original.

Needless to say, a firmer bed means that the target market for this mattress also changes, making the Cypress 11-inch bed much more suitable for heavy individuals, and less recommended for side sleepers who are very likely to feel pressure in the shoulders and hips areas of their body. However, the 13-inch version of this bed has a firmness rating of 5, which makes it way more suitable for side sleepers.

Sleep Trial

The Brentwood Cypress Memory Foam mattress comes with one of the most generous sleeping trials in the industry, which is a full year. That means that sleepers have a total of 356 nights to sleep on the Cypress and discover whether or not they’d feel comfortable enough in turning this into a permanent bed.

However, buyers who opt for this mattress will have to give it a 30-nights break-in period, just to have the body get acquainted with the new bed. Another interesting thing is that you can benefit from two separate sleep trials if you buy two Brentwood Cypress Memory Foam mattresses in the same household.

Warranty

Another noticeable and important thing about Brentwood and the Cypress mattress is the 25-year warranty that you’ll benefit from if you buy this mattress. There is plenty of fine print to be read when it comes to the warranty of this bed, but here’s a quick overview: you can have your mattress repaired/replaced for free within the first 10 years, you will pay 50% of the repair/replacement cost of the best from years 11 to 20, and the last five years will charge you a flat fee that’s the equivalent of 95 percent of the price you originally paid for the mattress.

The Wrap Up

As we draw the line, it’s important that we identify exactly what type of sleeper each of these two beds is supposed to serve. We can barely consider these two competitors if they serve a different market and cover different needs, right?

With that in mind, note that the Cypress Memory Foam mattress is designed for people who are on a budget and are looking to save as much money as they can with the acquisition of a new bed. The fact that the bed comes with a charcoal infusion already places it above other all-foam beds in terms of how well it can cool you down while you’re sleeping. Since it also isolates motion really well, it makes a nice mattress for couples. However, it’s firmness rating doesn’t make it as suitable for side sleepers as other all-foam beds, but it can provide good support for heavyweight back sleepers instead.

The Nolah mattress is a tag different because it comes with different construction and another firmness rating. Being more on the soft side, it is a mattress designed for people who like to sleep on their side and prefer that sinking into the bed feeling that a plush mattress can provide. It’s also a valid option for couples because of the foam that isolates motion really well. The softness of the bed makes it a terrible choice for stomach sleepers.
