A small Spanish apartment has found the perfect way to deal with limited floor space. PKMN Architectures has outfitted this space with a movable shelving unit. The creative idea has allowed them to divide the apartment into two parts.
They chose to build the unit using OSB, a cheap and sturdy material that made this project cost-effective as well as high-quality.
One of them always remains open and serves as both a formal dining area and workspace. The second part is a bit more interesting. You can’t definitely say that it has a certain function. The fact is that the movable shelving unit lets it slide into new functions at the blink of an eye.
This compact space contains the kitchen, a dining area, a casual living space as well as a bedroom. The whole shelving unit is quite heavy and weighs around 500 kg and yet it’s super easy to operate and move around. The designers used tracks and casters inspired by library shelving unit so the owner can easily move the units.
Slide the shelves over to reveal the kitchen. Fold down the table to reveal all the kitchen essentials and there you have it: a really functional and spacious kitchen with everything you need right there. Need a living space/ seating area? Close the kitchen and make room in between the shelving units.
And when it’s time to go to bed, the central shelf with fold out and the space will become a comfy bedroom. Across from the bed is a closet shelving area and a private dressing space.
The system is similar to that of Murphy beds. The bed folds down when needed and remains built into the shelving unit the rest of the time.
And the bathroom is right there too behind it.
