Modern House In Bali Incorporates The Lush Topography Into Its Design
Rather than following the typical building style of traditional Bali residences, architect Alexis Dornier chose a more modern and abstract approach in the case of this amazing project which was only just completed in 2019. The task was to design and build a private residence which would naturally interact with the landscape around it but would also stand out and look amazing in the process. As a result, the house has a tall and very open-looking ground floor which incorporates the social spaces and a second larger volume upstairs which cantilevers over the sides and which houses the private areas.
The architect chose to use a lot of reclaimed wood and locally-sourced sandstone which help to reference Bali’s traditional building culture. Of course, everything is materialized into a modern design which also favors the use of glass. This allows the house to remain closely connected to its surroundings and to take full advantage of the views over the tree canopies. Ultimately, the house has become a tranquil retreat, a place for recreation and relaxation but also a beautiful symbol of modern design infused with local cultural references.
