SAOTA’s First Miami Project Is A Gorgeous Waterfront Residence

Pine Tree Miami is SAOTA’s first project completed in Miami. It’s a family residence set between the Indian Creek Canal and Pine Tree Drive in the historic Collin’s Waterfront district. Like all of the studio’s projects, this one gives a lot of importance to the relationship between the building and the site on which it stands and well as to the connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Of course, privacy is also important, as important as the views in this case so the architects had to find a way to balance out these two elements in their design.

The overall design and architecture of the residence are modern and refined, with an emphasis on simple and linear forms and structures. The architects worked together with interior designer Nils Sanderson to find the best possible distribution of the spaces. They chose to spread the program across the site as much as possible and to make the most out of the property’s proximity to the water canal. This was relatively easy thanks to the linear characteristics of the site.

As mentioned before, the privacy and the views are equally important in the context of this project. So how did the studio manage to deal with this task? Well, it’s quite interesting actually. The residence is very much open towards the outdoors and a series of internal and external courtyards ensure that all the interior spaces have a direct connection to the outdoors. Also, glazed facades and large openings brings the views inside the house. A series of screens cloak the building and offer solar protection, helping to filter the sunlight while also ensuring a comfortable level of privacy without closing up the spaces.

In addition to the courtyards, a series of terraces and balconies act as buffer zones and transitional spaces between the indoor and outdoor spaces and offer a sense of security and intimacy. The rear courtyard is the largest of the outdoor spaces, featuring a huge pool which is as big as half of the residence’s internal floor space. The pool is framed by the house and by an open lounge space/ poolside deck.

As far as the interior design is concerned, the residence features a limited palette of materials, finishes and colors throughout its spaces. This helps to ensure fluid transitions between the spaces as well as a cohesive ambiance. The social area is open and spacious, integrating the kitchen, the dining space and the living room which open up towards the back yard and the pool. There are also six bedrooms in total, each with their own balcony sanctuary and panoramic view. This also applies to the design of the bathrooms.
