Succulent plants don’t need a lot of space for their roots which means you can plant them in all sorts of containers and even inside a small log in order to create a beautiful centerpiece. All you need to do is carve out a little space on one side of the log. You can use a chisel and a hammer to make a crevice and then put some cactus soil inside and add your little succulents. You can space them out or put them all in one spot, depending how you want the centerpiece to look like. More details about this simple project can be found on hearthandvine.

When making a log planter there are a few things to consider, such as how close the plants should be, how big the potting holes should be and also what type of plants you should use. Small succulents are ideal and they come in lots of different forms. You can also get trailing succulents if you want the log to look more full of greenery. You can use a power drill with spade bits to make the holes for the plants and you can fill these with soil and then add a bit of moss on top to seal them and to avoid making a mess on the table in case you’re planning to turn the log into a centerpiece. A big log can also be quite easily turned into a planter. Instead of placing it horizontally and carving out little nooks on the side for the plants you could place the log vertically and make a hole right at the center. If you can find a stump with the center already rotten out then this project will get even easier. Go ahead and clean the log and make the hole bigger if needed, then fill it with soil and add the plants. Another idea is to paint the exterior or the log or a section of it. Although a nice log with bark on it can make a lovely planter, that’s not your only option. You can also use any piece of waste wood as long as it’s big enough for the plans that you have in mind. Take the wood and sand it down, clean it and potentially flatten the bottom if needed. Then use a mini turbo to hollow out a section at the top and to form a sort of planter that you can then fill with soil and assorted succulents. There’s a tutorial on youtube that explains the whole process in case you’re interested.

This is a really cute hanging planter made out of log sections and rope. The actual plants stay inside plastic cups that fit at the center of the log so that the wood doesn’t get damaged. It would be fairly easy to make something like this from scratch if you had the supplies. Either way, leave the bark on because it adds texture to the design and makes the hanging planter looks authentic and charming. Check out this beautiful product on etsy for more details.
