Large family home with a new addition grafted onto the existing design

It’s quite common for homeowners to want to expand their houses. This usually happens either when the family grows bigger or when the need for privacy becomes an important issue for some of the members. In the case of this house, the expansion was built as a response to the parents’ need for a private study where they could work and relax. The residence is situated in Queens Park and occupies a north-east facing site.

The annex, if we can even call it that, is not as small as some of you might think. It’s a two-story folded volume with spacious areas inside. The clients wanted this space to include a large family home since the old one wasn’t exactly suitable for their growing family.

They also wanted the new volume to include a study and another space that would serve as a retreat for the parents. Both rooms are situated on the upper level, from where they offer beautiful views over the garden and the beautifully green area surrounding the volume.

Moreover, the living areas open onto a rear garden which is also very refreshing and beautiful. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the new family room let in these beautiful views along with plenty of natural light.{images from Fox Johnston}.
