Fun And Creative Ways To Incorporate a Kids’ Play Area Into Your Home

Creating a designated play area for the kids is a wonderful idea because it creates boundaries. It also means you can get very creative with the idea and include a bunch of elements which would have otherwise looked out of place in other areas of the house. There are many different ideas and styles that would suit this type of space and ultimately this is a very personal project but it’s always nice to have seek inspiration in other projects. With that in mind, we’re excited to share with you today some of our own favorite designs and ideas when it comes to kids’ play areas.

Since there are plenty of unused space underneath this staircase, the designers at IBINOSEKKEI in collaboration with Youji no Shiro and Kids Design Labo created a play area in here. It’s nothing too sophisticated or complicated, just a small ball pit, but it looks really nice and it actually fits really well into the decor. The ball pit is surrounded by a wood frame which follows the contour of the stairs and is quite compact too which means something similar can potentially fit into your own space.

This is a quirky design created by studio Ruetemple for a family home in Moscow. The idea here was to somehow incorporate a play area into the master bedroom so the kids can have a place to hang out in as the parents wake up in the morning. That required some planning and relying on a few unconventional design ideas. The room has a high, sloped ceiling and the designers took advantage of that. They created a big lounging and sleeping area at the bottom with an oversized mattress and a TV. Then a set of stairs lead to a landing area and up above a little play area with a house-shaped frame. There are safety nets everywhere and a breezy and playful ambiance all around.

This lovely family home from Taiwan has a cool layout where the children’s bedroom is adjacent to a play room. This gives them a designated space for sleeping and a special separate room where they can play and do all sorts of activities during the day. This was a project completed by studio HAO Design. What we love most about these two rooms is the way in which they’re connected. There’s a large wardrobe between the rooms with circular cut-outs that act as doors, allowing the children to pass through and move between the room in a fun and playful way.

Not every home has enough space for a separate playroom but that shouldn’t ruin your plans. This family home interior created by studio HAO Design is very inspiring. This is the children’s bedroom, a single space where they can sleep and play. It’s small but it has a custom-designed bed which reaches from one side of the room to the other. The mattress is up on a platform and there’s a nice view through the window from up there. Below there’s a series of bookshelves with handles that can be pulled to reveal hidden storage nooks for books, toys and other things.

This home from Poland has two bedrooms for the children and they both have designated play areas. The designed was done by studio Widawscy Studio Architektury. Each room has its own unique design. One of the bedrooms has a raised bed with storage underneath and open shelves which double as space dividers. The play area is part of the room but looks and feels like a separate space, featuring blue walls and matching carpet on the floor. The other room has a daybed which transitions into a custom playhouse similar to a small tent with soft upholstery on the floor and a couple of small shelves for toys and other things.

This is an interior created by Minimal Design which, as you can see, favors simplicity. It has modern built-in furniture and neutral colors and it looks and feels very clean and stylish. The bunk bed occupy one side of the room, featuring a set of stairs and storage drawers. The other side of the room has a custom set of white closets with a built-in desk and accent lighting. The center of the room remains open and can be used as a play area.

Another very inspiring project comes in the form of a house extension built by Andrew Maynard Architects. They designed the new section of the house as a series of small structures which appear to be separate areas from the outside but are actually interconnected on the inside. One of them is a space designed for the kids and has a study on the main floor and a second floor with a net for a floor. It’s a space where kids can learn, do their homework and relax and have fun in their spare time.

This beach house in Thailand has one of the coolest and most interesting interiors. At the center of the house there’s a big atrium space with five layers of netting suspended at different heights and angles, a fun place for the kids to hang out, lounge, relax and play. The rest of the house is super fun as well. The children’s bedrooms are connected by colorful tunnels so they can  meet up or switch bed is they want to and the bedrooms themselves have quirky and playful designs as well. This project was done by studio Onion.

There’s also lots of inspiration to the found in the interior design of this childcare center in Tokyo designed by studio Hibinosekkei. This is a space designed to encourage kids to play, interact and explore. It features various spaces dedicated to different activities, including a climbing wall and a swing that’s hanging from the ceiling. These are features that can potentially be incorporated into a variety of different spaces and in many different ways.

Another super fun and quirky feature that you could include in your house design is a slide. It can be incorporated into the design of the staircase, becoming an extension of some sort. We really like the combo created by FC Studio here. This custom staircase is part of the new interior design which they created for a family home in Chicago. They also came up with a lovely design for the children’s room which has a nice little play area with stairs that lead up to a platform, bookshelves and a whiteboard.

Speaking of slides, there’s also one in this magnificent house from Seoul designed by studio Moon Hoon. The slide is combined with a staircase and a set of bookshelves and makes it really fun and interesting to move between the ground floor and the upper levels. The ground floor of the house is an area dedicated to the children and this custom staircase is an important part of its design. The open threads create seating areas and double as bookshelves and underneath it all there’s a small study area.
