Situated about 70 miles from Montevideo, on a remote, 100-acre property, this gorgeous house is simple, yet sophisticated. The house has a grass-topped roof and stone walls which make it look as if it might have grown out of the mountain. Moreover it has many great features that are very hard to find in New York, such as 15 inches thick walls, 11 feet high ceilings, very big rooms and no neighbors for half a mile.

The clients bought the property online for $60,000 in 2007, started building the three-bedroom house in 2008 and spent $140,000 on construction which took 10 months. Not seeing eye to eye with the architects, Ms. Acevedo decided to take over the design and work with a civil engineer.
