How To Measure The Square Footage Of Your Home

Knowing the exact square footage of a space is very useful. It helps you better estimate the quantities when buying materials for a renovation, the cost of such a project and other such details. Calculating the square footage of your home, for example, is not difficult but it requires you to know exactly what needs to be measured.

In order to determine the square footage of your home or any other space you first have to measure the square footages of all the different parts of the space and then add them all together. So first break down the area into manageable parts. If the space has an odd shape, it can be easier to split it up into even squares or rectangles. It’s also possible for a space to be feature an odd shape such as a triangle for example.

Measure the length of the first portion and multiply it by the width. Do the same thing for all the other portions and then add the square footages of all the spaces. Using this method, you can find the exact square footage of a space and of the entire home.

But if all you need is an approximation, then you don’t have to go through all the trouble of measuring every little space. You can simply measure the outside of your home and then subtract any areas that shouldn’t be included in the overall square footage such as the garage, the basement, the stairs, etc.

Depending on the shape a space has, you’ll have to use different formulas for finding the square footage. For example, if an area is shaped like a half circle, find the diameter, divide it by 2 to get the radius and use the equation π × r2 where r is the radius, and divide by 2 to get the square footage. For a space shaped like a triangle, the equation is ½ (Base x Height).
