House with views over the lake and the tall trees

Located on the edge of the Scarborough Bluffs in Ontario, Canada, this beautiful contemporary house benefits from the unique dramatic views over the lake and the tall trees. It was a project developed by Taylor Smyth Architects. The house sits on an area of 2,300 sqf and it was completed in 2011, so it’s a fresh new home.

The new residence uses the foundation from an already existing house that used to be the owner’s childhood house. This way the memories weren’t completely erased and the new home rises from the ashes of the old one. This also allowed the nearby trees to be preserved. The exterior design of the house is quite simple. From the street it look like a white box with vertical glass panels. During the night it’s a lot more spectacular and it glows into the darkness like a giant lantern.

The rear of the house faces the Lake Ontario and it’s basically a two-storey wall of glass. This allows plenty of natural light to get in and it also provides beautiful views over the lake. Since it’s not the part of the house facing the street, privacy wasn’t such a big problem so the glass walls were easy to integrate into the design. Moreover, the trees are a great cover.{found on archdaily and pics by Ben Rahn/A-Frame Inc.}
