Tropical House in Vietnam Surrounded by Mango Trees And Shrimp Farms

Situated at the top of a hill in Cam Hai Dong, Vietnam, this house looks as if it has its own little island. The idea was to create a structure that blends into the landscape and communicated naturally with its surroundings. The project was developed by studio Idee architects and finished in 2018. The house is close to an old mango farm and also a series of shrimp farms so for its design the architects opted for an eclectic approach. They used stone for some of the exterior walls and structures, notably the large terrace facing west. This helped the building harmonize with the surrounding landscape. They also gave it full-height glass windows and sliding doors which bring the outdoors in and imprint a modern look on the house.

A large porch to the south-east and a swimming pool further expand the living areas towards the outdoors, blurring a bit the boundaries between the spaces. The contrast between the stone walls and the other straight and white surfaces is a very noticeable one but doesn’t make the house look out of place. On the contrary, the transition is smooth and natural. Moreover, an open courtyard area is framed by stone and glass walls and features a tree and vegetation growing inside. A rainwater collection system with a large underground tank takes care of the daily living needs of the inhabitants and also ensures water for irrigation during the dry months.
